TRANSPARENCY INTERNATIONAL-THE WEEK IN CORRUPTION, 28 JUNE 2019 Hi, Pinky swears are promises that cannot be broken. The tradition supposedly originates in Japan – which is where G20 leaders are meeting this week. Incidentally, they also have promises to keep. China, Mexico and Russia are just a few examples of countries represented at this year’s G20 summit that are failing to enforce their laws and promises against corruption, and in particular  foreign bribery. International bribery is one of the many ways in which corruption heavily impacts  sustainable development  and  economic growth.  It hinders fair access to markets as well as progress on today’s most pressing issues like education, healthcare, gender equality and the climate crisis. However, other forms of corruption also impede inclusive growth. To make economic development work for all, anti-corruption should be mainstreamed into every decision and policy, and not left in a silo or as lofty promises.  Tha

ABORTION SHOULD BE A PERSONAL CHOICE

Abortion should be a personal choice With all the debate around anti-abortion ban, a lot of women are opening up about getting an abortion & their valid reasons for it. Most women are calling it inhumane & something that disregards their rights & bodies. There could be women who would be forced to carry the baby of their rapist, which is deeply unsettling. Showing her disgust, actress Jameela Jamil shared her abortion story, which she calls the best decision she had ever made. “Contraception failed me & I did what was best for my mental & physical health at the time. & I would do it again if I had to. I don’t feel at all ashamed & if you had one too, for any reason, neither should you. She was heavily trolled after this statement. Many targeted her & called her names. She responded to them by saying, “There is need to normalise the fact that a lot of people don’t just have abortions due to emergencies. A lot of us are not ready, & that shoul

The Week In Corruption, 7 June 2019- From Transparency International Hi, A medieval Czech legend has it that King Wenceslas will return from the dead with a group of knights to save the Czech people in their darkest hour. Luckily, that wasn’t necessary this week: instead, citizens took it upon themselves to stand up for change when more than  120 thousand of them gathered  on the square named after King Wenceslas in Prague calling for Prime Minister Andrej Babiš to resign. The protests came after the European Commission (EC)  confirmed  Babiš’s significant conflicts of interest regarding his private businesses, following the  complaint  from our chapter, TI Czech Republic (TI-CZ). Already last year, TI-CZ revealed that one of Babiš’s many companies, Agrofert, had received millions in EU agricultural subsidies. In 2017, Babiš had put the company into two trust funds but remained the ultimate beneficiary of these funds, hiding behind an additional layer of secrecy. In Czechia

Streamline Entire Education System, Sc Tells State & Central Govts The entire education system of the country should be streamlined so that students do not have to face stress while seeking admissions to various courses, the Supreme Court said Tuesday. Taking note of "plight of students" due to uncertainty over admissions to postgraduate medical and dental courses in the academic year 2019-20 in Maharashtra, the apex court said such a situation is difficult for the meritorious students. "Our anxiety is for the students. This happens every year and there is uncertainty in the mind of students with regard to admissions in medical or other courses," a vacation bench comprising Justices Indu Malhotra and M R Shah said while hearing the Maharashtra medical admission matter.   "Why don't you streamline the entire education system? Why this tension and stress to the students? Why all these litigations," the bench said. "We are tellin

Why Women Don’t Leave Violent Partners In Matrimony: By Dr Prakriti Poddar   Any physical, sexual, emotional abuse, and/or controlling behaviours perpetuated by a person over an intimate partner is considered intimate partner violence. The cause of harmony and fulfilling partnership is what every couple strives for- it falls under the clause of basic human needs that makes life more cherishable. Yet, violence among partners is prevalent in most cases, with heartbreaking accounts of intimate partner violence (IPV), leading to worst case scenarios such as death. Any physical, sexual, emotional abuse, and/or and controlling behaviours perpetuated by a person over an intimate partner, is considered as IPV, with the afflicted being mostly women. Perpetrators consist of not just men, but families and near ones too. In India, its prevalence is great, owing to the patriarchal framework where the men are given leeway to any unfathomable situation. Here, the society and f
